Assisi

Assisi:
ASSISI DISTRICT
Municipalities: Assisi, Bastia Umbra, Bettona, Cannara
Territory: the Assisi district covers the northern part of the Umbrian valley, bordered on the northeast by Mount Subasio and on the southeast by the hills that separate it from the Tiber Valley. The territory is prevalently flat and hilly, with a number of watercourses (the Chiascio, Topino, Ose, Sambro) that make this lovely countryside exceptionally fertile.
Worthy of note: Assisi is famous the world over for the figure of St. Francis and each year thousands of pilgrims make it their destination. The town sits on a spur of Mount Subasio, a dominant position over the green Umbrian valley, appearing in the distance with a cascade of churches, houses, and belfries. The smaller towns are also worth visiting, including Bettona, defined the "Etruscan Balcony". Bettona is a natural belvedere that looks out onto a panoramic amphitheatre, a dramatic creation of the Central Apennines, in a semicircle that stretches from Lake Trasimeno to Perugia, Assisi, Spello, Foligno, and Montefalco.
